HAPPY NEW FROM CHAC!!! Call for Entry: "Milagros del Corazón" Miracles of the Heart Fundraiser!
You are invited to design a heart! You are cordially invited to design a piece of memorable artwork for CHAC's 13th annual silent auction fundraiser! We provide you a blank wooden heart, for a donation of $3.00 to cover supplies, which you will then turn into one of your magnificent masterpieces! We ask that you please do not design your heart as a valentine, but that you make it representational of your body of work. In other words, if you are a painter known for painting particular themes let your heart be the canvas for your theme. Do what you do best! Be sure to cover the entire wooden surface and make your art community friendly. CHAC will provide hanging devices for wooden hearts. We have a limited number of hearts this year so pick yours up early! You are also invited to submit original artwork, goods or services, baskets or items for baskets. Your donation of these items to CHAC's fundraiser will all be tax deductible. We look so forward to her help and sharing her joy with us as she assists us in hanging group shows. Thanks for your great eye, wise counsel, friendship and the stories. We love you Jerry! CHAC Thanks its Members and Supporters
As the new year begins, we reflect on all we are thankful for. We wish to extend our deepest gratitude for your contribution to the vitality of the organization this past year! Not only would CHAC cease to exist without our members, artists and supporters, but we would also be without the creativity, artistic talent, and commitment of time and resources that collectively, enable the organization to thrive. In addition to serving as one of the pioneers of Denver's ArtDistrict on Santa Fe, CHAC is also the only Chicano/Latino art Gallery in Colorado that features the work of new and established artists. Since being founded in 1978 by a group of passionate visual and performing artists, CHAC has evolved into a dynamic arts organization concentrated on meeting the growing demand from the community. Your commitment enables us to continue to offer year-round Gallery shows that include a spectacular array of visual art, provide nearly 5,000 underserved children with the opportunity to participate in authentic cultural arts education opportunities, sponsor landmark cultural events, such as El Dia de los Muertos celebrations and the annual Chile Harvest Festival and encourage an overall understanding of cultural awareness and a respect for diversity. Additionally, your support enables the organization to showcase a variety of local performers, such as dancers whose recent visit to the Gallery included a performance and tutorial on the traditional Chicano/Indian Matachine dance, as seen in the photo below. Please know that when you contribute to CHAC, you directly impact the lives of the more than 23,000 individuals served by the organization each year. And, as a special thank you for your tax-deductible gift of $25 or more, you will receive a hand-painted, tin Oaxacan ornament to help celebrate the season. Buying Handmade makes for better gift-giving.
The giver of a handmade gift has avoided the parking lots and long
lines of the big chain stores in favor of something more meaningful. If
the giver has purchased the gift, s/he feels the satisfaction of
supporting an artist or crafter directly. The recipient of the handmade
gift receives something that is one-of-a-kind, and made with care and
attention that can Buying handmade is better for people. The ascendancy of chain store culture and global manufacturing has left us dressing, furnishing, and decorating alike. We are encouraged to be consumers, not producers, of our own culture. Our ties to the local and human sources of our goods have been lost. Buying handmade helps us reconnect. Buying handmade is better for the environment. The accumulating environmental effects of mass production are a major cause of global warming and the poisoning of our air, water and soil. Every item you make or purchase from a small-scale independent artist or crafter strikes a small blow to the forces of mass production. Personally, my goal as an artist is not to create 'the next big thing,' but to consistently create products that people enjoy and I can feel good about. I'm convinced this won't make me rich, but as a creator, I find more meaning in coming up with ideas that don't just meet public expectations. Did You Know That...
CHAC leads three cultural arts workshops a week at three different locations for under served populations: The Bridge Project, Boys & Girls Club, and Cristo Rey? We have about 20 children in attendance each week at each location for a total of about 60 children served weekly! Have You Heard That...
CHAC leads cultural arts workshops right in our galleries where school groups make art surrounded by the fabulous works of our local artists? Workshops for school groups follow multiple Colorado State Standards that school teachers are required to teach. For the convenience of some schools, we also bring our workshops to them and conduct them right into the school! The Latest Buzz is....
CHAC is now authorized by Adams State College to conduct classes for teacher to earn recertification credit required to renew their teaching licensewhich expires every 5 years. Our classes are suitable for Elementary, Art, Spanish, History, and Social Studies teachers We Are Please to Tell You That...
We served more than 23,000 individuals through our programming this past year, 5,000 of which are underserved children! This is a nearly 10% increase over last year! Your support helps us continue to grow in this area! Thanks you!!!! January Show 2012

Su Teatro Announces "El Corrido del Barrio"
Su Teatro is pleased to present to you this holiday season a classic Su Teatro work, El Corrido del Barrio – a coming of age play (with music!) about the families, friends and neighbors who lived in the old Westside of Denver – Auraria. The old 9th St. neighborhood was the religious, cultural and political center of the Chicano community. In 1972. The neighborhood was depopulated so that the Auraria Higher Education Center could be built. The loss to the Chicano community was tremendous. Join us for a play that captures the lives of residents, the sweetness of everyday life, the challenges of racism and inequality, and the sacrifices that a tight knit barrio made so that the next generations of Chicanos could have more opportunities. El Corrido del Barrio is a beautiful tribute to a cherished local history - a special and significant Su Teatro masterwork. Be a part of it! · Put together a comadre group! 12 tix are $12 each – purchase in advance. · Buy a Flex Pass – 12 admissions – you can use any time in any combination · Make a donation to Su Teatro in honor of the season on Colorado Gives Day- December 6 or at your convenience: http://martinezled.com/donate-online/ · Details about the show and everything else at our website! http://martinezled.com/ · SPREAD THE WORD TO YOUR FRIENDS! His subjects are our tias and tios, our visabuelos, our primos, our antepasados. We see ourselves in his subjects – we are Mexican, we are Indian, we are Chicanos – we are Americans. And Martinez is finally painting what he was born to pain.

Michael Penny
“To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower; to hold infinity in the palm of your hand and eternity in an hour--is inspiration.” -William Blake
Local Denver Artist Michael J. Penny shares his broad collection of inspirational art pieces. His work includes a wide collection of fine pieces including unique art pieces that were inspired by his love of nature, culture, spirituality and life. Michael's unique ability to reproduce an artifact look in a new world setting sets his work apart from any other artist. The combination of deep relief sandblasting in stone with fine detailing is both unique and of the highest quality. The final product of stone tile art pieces and embellishments is something that is guaranteed to please each and every one who views his work.

Robert Martinez
Robert's interest in art ranges from painting bold contemporary abstract pieces to creating Native American representational paintings. Though not Native American himself, Robert has a keen interest in portraying a proud and illustrious people. Robert will be featuring the vibrant oversize Native American classic paintings for which he is best known. Bob explores a color explosion with purples and orange hues which delight the senses! His work stirs the heart and appeals to all lovers of art.
Suzanne Martino
Suzanne's work continues to delight and amaze viewers of all ages with her whimsy and creativity. She is motivated in her work by finding the relationships between seemingly unrelated objects; which despite differences may share a similar color, shape or surface sheen. Over the last few years she has developed an interest in vintage collectables particularly ones that might be misunderstood, and deemed “cheesy”. She incorporates them into her work where they are given a second chance to be seen with a new perspective.
Suzanne strives to find ways to relate to the human experience. This is the driving force in her work. She attempts, through artistic commentary, to look at the ways in which our humanity unfolds, sometimes with seriousness, sometimes with humor; and hopefully always with a bit of whimsy and imagination.

What can you do with a handkerchief? There is a big history about the handkerchief (paliacate or pañuelo) in Mexico. The handkerchief made its appearance in Mexico in the 1800’s remains a favorite Mexico and in the American west ever since. Worn around the head and under the hat it protects against sweating and from the sun. Used around the neck, in cowboy style, it is available to cover the face and nose if there was a sand storm. It is still used in dance and decoration. Learn a handkerchief dance, play handkerchief games, make a special handkerchief craft.

We are honored to have you join our organization. We will be featuring Nancy this month and the other new members in newsletters to follow.
Nancy became affiliated with CHAC in 2005. She worked at the Denver Botanic Gardens when CHAC was hosting the Chili Harvest Festival there. She met an artist and a Board member at that time, Paul Potts. (Offically introduced through Steven Rozic) Paul Potts is truly responsible for getting Nancy on board as he recognized her artistic abilities and hence she signed up to do the group show, "Transformers", with Paul, Carlos Martinez, Daniel Lowenstein, & Steve Rozic. Nancy felt it was a complete honor. From then on she has shown, volunteered, and now most recently joined the Board of Directors at CHAC.
She is utilizing her fundraising background (10 years) and creative artistic side to help raise funds, build CHAC in the social media community, and continue to help CHAC grow overall. She looks forward to working with the dynamic group of individuals that make up CHAC's Board of Directors.
Thank you Nancy! We are happy to have you on board!

She coordinates it finds the speakers, send out PR to gather people. She usually helps out at cash register first Fridays, she is great with customers, and is always available when she is needed.
Belinda Maestas
Our dear sweet Belinda! We are so blessed to have this one of a kind original as one of our own at CHAC! Belinda is giving, loving and is always there with a smile and ready to sell you something you didn't even know you needed!
Belinda is one of the most generous people I have ever met....she is always donating things we need at CHAC. For instance... the other day a man came by selling first aid kits. I know we should really have an official one...but the price held me back. Next thing I know it is hanging on the wall in the bathroom!
Our donated vacuum cleaner sounded like a very large jet taking off when we vacuumed....one day a brand new vacuum cleaner just showed up...
We never had a water faucet in the backyard....we carried water from the kitchen to water our plants. One day a man is in the backyard working on something...I asked who he was and what he was doing? She said "Honey...don't worry about it" He was installing a faucet so we can water the plants and clean the patio.
I think Belinda is an example for all of us and what we can do for each other and for CHAC. She is our "One of a kind Belinda" and we are so lucky to have her!

ABeCedarios-Mexican Folk Art ABC's in English and Spanish
The famous folk artist brothers, Moisés and Armando Jiménez, carved the wonderful animal figures that illustrate each letter in ABeCedarios. Working with their wives and children in the beautiful village of Arrazola in Oaxaca, Mexico, they carved and painted each enchanting animal by hand.
Delicate hand-painted animals from Oaxaca lead little ones through a bilingual alphabet. This brightly colored book presents the alphabet in both Spanish and English, including the four additional lettersthat make the Spanish alphabet so much fun.

Summer has arrived and the mood throughout the Gallery remains high-spirited and energetic. CHAC is in the midst of celebrating its 32nd year of featuring the art and culture of the vibrant Chicano and Latino community. And as you read this, the June exhibit, “Beyond the Sea,” is taking place and young participants are delving into mixed media cultural arts projects at the organization’s first ever Summer Family Workshop Series.
These occurrences are all taking place because of your generosity. In 2009 alone, CHAC:
Served a total of more than 18,300 individuals
Offered 25 exhibits that featured the work of both new and established artists
Sponsored landmark cultural events, such as El Dia de los Muertos celebrations and the annual Chile Harvest Festival
Served nearly 3,000 children, 85% of who qualify for free or reduced lunch programs
Held weekly art workshops for Boys & Girls Club participants and twice weekly workshops at the University of Denver’s Bridge Project
Encouraged an overall understanding of cultural awareness and a respect for diversity
CHAC’s ability to accomplish such feats has required a tremendous commitment from our donors and volunteers, and we extend our deepest gratitude for your contribution of time and resources.
In order to continue to provide emerging and established Chicano and Latino artists with the tools they need to succeed, while simultaneously responding to the needs of the most underserved young members of our community, we are asking for your continued support. Your tax-deductible donation in any amount will enable CHAC to reach these students and provide Metro Denver residents with an awareness and education of the rich Chicano and Latino culture.
On behalf of everyone at CHAC, thank you in advance for your support and for making a difference in the local community!
Warmly,
Crystal O’Brien Tony Vecchio

EXHIBITION DISCRIPTION: ARTIST ELIGIBILITY: WORK ELIGIBILITY: CURATOR: Jerry Vigil, Denver Artist and Santero. EXHIBITION CALENDAR: SUBMISSION INFORMATION: CHAC Gallery Show: Beyond the Sea
Featuring new works by Mardelle Espinoza, Reuben Espinoza, David Lowenstein, Suzanne Martino, Clay Meason, Rebecca Rozales, & Ian Rumley "O floating freedom, O sea of sounds, of forms, of radiance, viva, fountain of being!" “Paz” Our intention for this show was to create a common theme and then work individually as well as collectively. All artists are presented with the task of seeing the potential of the materials he/she works with. This is an integral part of the artist’s personal vision. Keeping this in mind, we made a decision to come together in a collective spirit and produce a piece of art work which incorporates multiple perspectives and fuses them into a shared artistic vision. "Beyond the Sea we forge new legends from the dust of lapis and paint our canvas with the pallet of the evening sky." Opening Reception: June 4th 6 - 10 PM CHAC Norte Featured Artists

Juanita M. Mascarenas My recent artwork is the result of being “awakened” by the beauty of color! When I walked into the CHAC gallery for the first time a couple of years ago… I looked around at the beautiful artwork, and colorful walls in La Tiendita. My eyes were opened for the first time in a long time…my heart was stirring with a desire to create with COLOR! My recent painting and photography reflect this new found inspiration that has lifted my life and my spirit! I hope you enjoy my new creations as much as I enjoyed creating them! A Family of Artists
Pat Morse, Linda Krug, Kay Gross, Doug Gross, Nicole Brown, Becky Kastelz As Native Coloradoans, these artists are all related and have a love for the arts. Three Artists are Sisters:
Stevon Lucero Visit Stevon and his visionary art this June at the CHAC Norte Gallery... Stevon is on a spiritual journey. More than a visual artist he is in truth, a philosopher artist. Each painting reflects a metaphor of his own internal dialogue between himself and God. Each piece tells a story in which the ultimate intent and value lies in the future when people will have a greater understanding and appreciation for true spiritual art. www.stevonlucero.com
Suzanne Martino Suzanne's work continues to delight and amaze viewers of all ages with her whimsy and creativity.

From a freewheeling, out-of-control life of booze, drugs, guns, intimidation and prison, Pablo Flores ’ art mirrors the evolution of his life. Flores’ trade is carpentry although he has explored music and American Indian art as well. Completely self-taught, Flores turned his life towards the arts while stumbling around a dump, kicking rusted tin cans, animal bones, tattered fabrics, wrecked car parts, splintered barn wood and getting INSPIRED! By working with these materials in making crosses and retablos, he found a metaphor for his life – taking broken, discarded, abandoned pieces and recasting them as vibrant, passionate artistic statements. A prolific craftsman, he once made 40 crosses in as week, and has created over 1,300 crosses spanning a 7 year period.
Flores is an ordained minister, father of three and grandfather of five, as well as member of the gospel group, Blue Heaven. His symbolic creations are his ministry as well as his folk art. Three feathers represent the father, son and Holy Spirit. The appearance of a single heart is God’s heart. His work shows Christ’s suffering and God’s love. “It is how I see the role of Christ,” he explains. “I take discarded materials, found, unwanted objects. They are like discarded lives. I hang them on a cross or turn them into something of worth and beauty…just like discarded lives that are taken and placed in the hands of God will become worthy and beautiful. Just like my life.”
Lydia Garcia is one of the foremost female Santeras creating spiritual art today. As a life long resident of Taos, steeped in the Hispanic traditions of art, culture and religion, Lydia’s art in all of its passion and depth, reflects her cultural heritage. Nestled among the Sangre de Cristo mountain chain is the small village of Taos, New Mexico, an artist’s community since the 1800’s. Here art is a way of life. Lydia Garcia, known to the community and her collectors as Lydia, was born in Taos to a Hispanic family and as the eldest of five daughters was trained in the craft of the Saint makers. As a young girl Lydia worked alongside her father while he created Santos (saints) and wonderful objects in his wood working shop. Her hunger for art brought her to the studios of Taos’ artists, Ward Lockwood and Andrew Dasburg. In their studios, Lydia sat without saying a word, so that they would permit her to watch them work. In this manner Lydia initiated her own training, Lydia still paints anything she can get her hands on, recycled wood, tin cans, old furniture, and treasures left out-side her home by neighbors and friends.
Today Lydia is a full time Santera and continues to paint and sculpt in the same adobe workspace built by her grandfather where she was born and raised working with her father. Lydia integrates contemporary media, such as acrylics and recycled & found materials, into the historic role of a Santera. Although modern in her technique, the core of Lydia’s work embodies the traditional faith in God and spirituality of a Santera. As part of the Santera tradition, Lydia inspires others with her faith. Lydia gives thanks to God for the many blessings in her life. She passes on these blessings to her collectors in the form of unique hand painted prayers on the back of each work. For others, she teaches workshops, blessing her students through her instruction and guidance . Lydia’s passion and faith touches the many lives that she encounters, through her art, her prayers, and teachings. Lydia’s retablos and santos have been acquired for some of the finest private collections and museums worldwide.
Duane O’Hagan is a sprightly 72. He stands tall, a little bit bent at the neck, probably from looking down at the ground all the time for art supplies. O’Hagan lives in Tres Piedras, NM in an interesting home of local construction, sliced cord wood, concrete, decorated with his own wooden masks and hand-carved bird pieces and other wonderful collections of simple objects like baskets. His home has a feeling similar to his recent artwork, pieced together from “un-significant” objects and finessed into something truly spirited and expressive. Growing up in Montana and studying as a landscape painter in Ontario, Canada at the Ontario College of Art in the Fine Arts, he was exposed to northwest regional first nations’ art, Inuit styles and shapes, and a traditional background in the academic arts. He found the Inuit masks, and later the Kachina masks to be “frontal and visually static, emphasizing their immortal and supernatural qualities.”
In New Mexico, he followed his nose, living creekside in La Madera and collecting interesting pieces of wood, taking them home and turning them into traditionally inspired masks and lately, birds. He considers his “spirit birds”, carved from cottonwood found along the river banks, to be his “serious whimsy”. Whimsical perhaps, but not sticky sweet, the birds are quirky, curious and attentive with wide, round eyes and gently amorphous bodies. O’Hagan looks for the lines in the wood, finds the face, the tail and the wings from the tree’s natural shape, and creates a “bird blank” which he then gives life to by adding its unique features. His academic background continues to be expressed in his use of aged wood (always a “found” piece with one or more previous lives) and his creation of “retablos” (painted panels) depicting saints, and as with his masks, their “immortal and supernatural qualities”.
A carver of wood and stone, Zach Powell was born in a rural
community in Mississippi. Growing up, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and
being surrounded by nature. In his teen years, he lived in St. Louis, MO
before enlisting in the Navy and traveling the world.
After completing his military service, he explored the United States
before ending up in Boulder, CO. There he studied Kung Fu, honed his
creative art of carving, met his wife Robin, and had his family.
1982 was the year Zach moved his family to Tres Piedras, NM, located 32 miles northwest of Taos. It was a “good distance from the nearest town, and therefore the right place.” In “TP”, he decided to make a living by creating art out of the natural materials of the area. He became known for his sculptures, smudge sticks, baskets, dream catchers, and furniture, in addition to his signature silent and stoic carvings. Each carving depicts a saint in prayer and meditation but is intentionally un-named. This allows the viewer to ascribe one’s own spiritual identity to the carving, wherever one is in one’s life, however that carving may be of help along the way….
“The outdoors will always be a major contributor to my creativity”,
says Zach.
“The planet gives it, I just add my touch!”

CHAC Gallery announces the opening of “Sacred Passions” a traditional and contemporary art exhibit. The traditional art work will focus on the creation of “Santos” or “Saints” for homes and churches. This remarkable folk art, dating back to the 1600’s, came into being when New Mexico and parts of Colorado were ruled by Spain. Early Spanish settlers faced a shortage of imports so they created their own religions artifacts, their deep religious roots sustained them in the new world. Santo Art has evolved and is created in various mediums. Some artists still use homemade gesso, natural pigments and pine tree varnish, others develop their works with modern techniques. The contemporary artwork will focus on drawings of low rider cars.
Artists in order of artwork displayed here: Carlos Santistevan, Gene Atencio, Teresa Duran, Lena Blea, Judy Miranda, Sister Roberta Westrick and Lynn Fresquez.
Artist reception will be held on April 16th from 6:00 - 9:00 PM.
The exhibit runs April 2nd through May 1st.

"A few years back I joined CHAC, seeking a local place to network with other artists and to show my art. Not only were these desires fulfilled, but I have clearly seen CHAC's growth and quality improving constantly.
I have come to truly enjoy and take pride in being a part of CHAC. The members are like a family, making me look forward to their warm greetings and comraderie. It is a home away from home. I do enjoy volunteering and only wish I could have more time to be help out more."

"My name is Russell Warwick and I can honestly say that volunteering at the CHAC house every first Friday is one of the best parts of my month. I love the art work and I can't say enough positive things about both the good folks that run CHAC and the patrons I see every first Friday. Whether you are a sophisticated art critic, a person that knows nothing about art but knows what they like about the medium (that would be me!), or a person that has no aesthetic sensibilities whatsoever and just likes a good social scene, the CHAC house is the place for you. Please come down and see us on First Fridays! It's always a good time."
Available in La Tiendita when we can keep it in stock, this adorable book by Angèle Delaunois is popular with kids of all ages. It sells out every time. www.cincopuntospress.com
Quoted from Amazon: "Caca. Poop. Number two. Kids have a thousand names for it. Don’t they want to know where it comes from? The Fantastic Voyage of Señor Caca shows kids the hows and whys.
A smart wolf in a lab coat leads kids on a journey through their digestive system. A little girl eats an apple for a snack (crunch, crunch), and the apple drops into the esophagus (glug, glug) before a stop in the stomach. At each stop along the way the wolf explains in simple scientific terms what the body is doing. After the pit stop in the stomach, what remains of the apple must enter the small intestine (gurgle, gurgle), then the large intestine, and finally . . . well, you know. Hint: It doesn’t smell like roses here.
This delightful book marries Angèle Delaunois’ kid-sized scientific text with Marie Lafrance’s joyful kinetic illustrations to teach children what really does go on inside their bodies."
Business supporter of the month is Tomorrows Body Salon and Day Spa Special thanks to Stylists Pat Valdez, James Martinez & L'Kia for their generous donations of services to CHAC's Milagros del Corazon auction.

Fernando Duran Alcantar
Fernando Duran-Alcantar was born on February 8, 1976 in Mexico
City, Mexico. Fernando started drawing at a young age and his ability
to draw almost anything was soon noticed by family members and teachers.
Cinco de Mayo, Mexican Independence Day, and other major events and celebrations inspired his series of paintings that portray traditional rituals of Mexico's pre-Columbian cultures and regional dances. While some people choose to keep Mexico's culture alive through dance, Fernando is preserving its history, identity, and folklore through his art.
He prefers not to categorize his technique and style, but best describes it as a combination of precise planning with quick strokes while the paint is wet; capturing movement and energy. His paintings are reflections of his emotions and impulses guided by the endless choices and directions that the canvas provides and becomes.
Stevon Lucero
Stevon Lucero has been painting for over forty years. Since childhood, he has experienced lucid dreams and visions and ventured more then once into separate realities. Through these revelations and studies of metaphysical, philosophical, and historical media, he has been guided to create two unique art forms: Metarealism and Neo-Precolumbian or Aztec art.
Dominic Domingo
Dominic Domingo, a native of Colorado, is a naturally talented artist offering a unique style and wide array of deliverance. Dominic is a self taught artist who was drawn to art as a child. With his unique ability to work with multiple techniques, he creates his pieces using oils, acrylics and watercolors. While he is a firm believer that he was blessed with his talent, Dominic affirms “My artwork is a reflection of me.”
Bob Martinez
Bob Martinez continues to showcase his Native American pieces at CHAC Norte Gallery in the Santa Fe Arts District. On First Friday in February he will introduce new work on pieces of paper using metallic, acrylic and water color. Bold color with primitive themes can be viewed.
Suzanne Martino
This month’s work will be a tribute to the archetypes, associations and perceptions of Love. Exploring love in its varying facets from romantic and idealized, to universal and altruistic, to humorous and whimsical. Having it, desiring it; and finding the neutral place in-between.
Michael Penny
Michael Penny is introducing a new line of SMart art. "These are Small Mounted affordable art tiles in a 6" X 6" size format starting at only $35.00! The tiles are original individual pieces that can stand alone or can be grouped together. If you have a small space to fill or want to add to another collection they are perfect in either case! The subject matter ranges from the various animals, the tree of life, sun and moons and more!!! They can be special ordered if desired."
James Mascarenas
New artist James Mascarenas will be debuting his new collection at CHAC on first Friday in March. James is a Denver native and has been involved in art most of his life. On February 20th, CHAC continues its Saturday Children’s workshops of celebrating the monthly traditions of Mexico led by Rita Flores de Wallace.
Rita is from Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico where she learned many of
Mexico’s traditions and enjoyed many authentic celebrations. Since she
has been in Denver, Rita has tirelessly brought her knowledge, coupled
with hands-on art-crafts, to the people of Denver. Now she is working
with CHAC to pass along experiences of Mexico’s varied celebrations.
CHAC invites you to come and celebrate with us. Share the stories of
how your family celebrates these occasions, or learn about the rich
heritage of lesser known celebrations.
February's celebration: Dia de la Candelaria
Processions, songs, instruments are all part of Dia de la Candelaria (Day of the Candles), celebrated on February 2nd. (Ours will be held on the third Saturday from 2 to 4 pm as usual.) As with most Mexican celebrations, this, is a
combination of Catholic and native Mexican traditions. Come learn about
the fusion of these two traditions and the “blessing” of the animals. On third Saturday, bring your pet or favorite stuffed animal. As you participate in this workshop. Your will have an opportunity to make a dancing animal puppet. Suggested donation $1.00
Thanks Jeanette for your donation!
I am proud to be a CHAC artist and supporter because it is my home base. I was welcomed with open arms when I joined and have grown from the support and camaraderie of the CHAC family. As a member, I feel it is my duty to contribute to CHAC in time or money to ensure its continued success. In these difficult economic times it is even more important to support its mission to educate the public about the rich art and cultural of our community. I encourage all of our artists to donate to CHAC!

In June of 2005, I suffered an accident that changed my whole life.
Rock-climbing at Rainbow Falls, I experienced a 40 ft. fall, hitting a rock, face first and then falling into the water, unconscious under the falls. My companion scrambled down the rocks to look for me and found me underwater, face, ribs, wrists and spine fractured, bleeding and drowning. She pulled me from the water and stuck a finger down my throat causing me to regurgitate water in my lungs. In the sand near my unconcious body, she found a ring and assuming it was mine, she picked it up.
The paramedics arrived in time for my lungs to collapse. They managed to get a breathing tube into me and rush me to the hospital. Unfortunately, they collapsed again at the hospital and a machine was breathing for me.
After doing emergency surgery on my face, my blood oxygen level would not go over 48. The minimum level for heathly tissue is 80. The doctors gave my family three options for my prognosis. My brain and heart were the only organs remaining functional. Either I would die, I would be brain-dead or I would be crippled. My family could do nothing but pray.
On July 4th, 2005, weeks after the accident. I finally awoke and was able to complete my first sentence to my family, “No matter what, I will always love God.” With improvement I was able to start physical therapy but more problems were on the way. I could no longer keep food down and I went back on breathing tubes again. More surgery was discussed. Finally, with medical help, I began to digest food and gain weight. The doctors looked at me as a miracle patient after having me declared a lost cause seven times.
In August, I began to learn to speak and walk. However, my attitude was still down because I could not properly work with my hands and I had lost the use of one eye which made it impossible to do my art. During my rehabilitation at my Aunt’s house, she showed me some beautiful wood carvings created by a one-eyed man who only has seven fingers. The light dawned on me that I would adapt and learn again.
When I saw my companion from the day of the accident, she gave me the ring she found in the sand next to my dying body. “It is not mine,” I told her. She replied, “it is now,” and placed it on my finger. I have never removed it since. My life has changed. My art has returned and I welcome you to see it this month at CHAC.
CHAC thanks generous donor Pandora Jewelry for making CHAC the recipient of their Skull Auction fundraising event.

Rob Yancey
Rob began as a self taught wood carver who enjoys studying and creating Spanish Colonial and Latino art. Through his artwork, Rob tries to invoke the words of Do Hyun Choe, “Stillness is what creates love, movement is what creates life, to be still, yet moving…that is everything. Rob’s goal is to produce art work in a non-dualistic mindset and allow the Creator to infect those who are searching for their identity and purpose, even when they appear to have no soul.
Tammy Yancey
Tammy is the self proclaimed mud pie queen and bug aficionado who creates jewelry that is inspired by her love of nature and the beautiful colors she sees along the way of her life both past and present. She spent many childhood summers in San Juan, New Mexico on her family’s ranch getting connected to the earth and the dramatic colors that would lend themselves to her future jewelry making passion. These childhood colors in her mind are the common thread that run through her beads, stones and silver, making wearable pieces of art. Tammy understands that people of all classes, particularly the poor(whom she holds close to her heart), want to accessorize as well as everyone else. This is one of the motives as she creates one of a kind pieces that all people can afford.

Robert Maestas Huge strides in technology have paved the way for a whole new art form. In the conventional form creativity manifests itself through the paint and the brush. In this age of technological revolution it also happens through other tools such as the computer and software. Each era has seen the evolution of a new art form, we are now beginning to witness and experience Digital Art. Creativity has no limitations, the "CREATIVE MIND" is the same, the tools available to the artist are just different.

CHAC Receives $12,000 from DOCA in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Funds
On September 10, 2009, The Denver Office of Cultural Affairs (DOCA) announced that CHAC will receive $12,000 in federal recovery funds to restore the Education Coordinator position.
The grant administered by DOCA, is part of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds allocated to the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)
to help combat job loss in the arts due to declining philanthropic and
other support in the current economic climate. This one-time funding
allocation allowed DOCA to distribute grants according to narrow
federal guidelines designed to ensure job preservation and restoration
in the arts and cultural sector over the next year.
The Denver Office of Cultural Affairs has awarded CHAC $12,000 to reinstate the position of Education Coordinator. This key position will allow CHAC to continue to provide and grow innovative and educational programming that greatly benefits numerous Colorado communities. These funds will provide the resources for this part time position to continue from October 1, 2009 through September 30, 2010.
Julie Marino has been chosen to fill this new position. Julie received a Bachelor of Science degree in Studio Art and Certification to teach Art k-12 from Nazareth college of Rochester. She also received a Master’s of Science degree in Museum Studies with a concentration in anthropology from the University of Colorado in Boulder.
In her work, Julie has been part of a three time Colorado School of
Excellence and a nationally award winning Charter School. She has
curated and judged art shows and directed and inspired students and
youth into the fields of art and art education. She has successfully
worked with college/adult interns, training and guiding them into the
fields of museum education and art education. Julie has developed and
evaluated numerous informal hands-on learning experiences, to enrich
and engage students’ formal classroom learning. Her programs fulfill
multiple Colorado state standards.
In addition, Julie is a working illustrator. She has illustrated for
companies, museums, and places of education. She has most recently been
published with her book illustrations and educational products, through
Whole Spirit Press. Throughout her high schools years, Julie was
apprenticed in illustration in Rochester, NY, by one of Rochester’s,
acclaimed illustrators, Dick Luby. During her college years she trained
with six of America’s top illustrators.
Julie’s accomplishments include exhibiting at the Master Eagle Art
Gallery in New York City and running her own business providing
travelling exhibits, educational programming and a cultural market to
area museums, schools, libraries, and senior centers. In her business,
Cultural Interpretations, Julie works as curator, anthropologist, and
cultural historian directly with people of indigenous heritage to
understand their life experience. She has created Cultural
Interpretations as a voice for the people, in order to bring meaning
and enrichment to our lives, underscoring the common human experience
that unites us all. She has served on boards, such as the Santa Fe Arts
District, Alianza de las Artes Americanas, and has been recently
appointed to the board of the Colorado, Wyoming Association of Museums.
She has participated in an Archaeological dig with Penn State and the
Harvard field school at Tiawanaku, Bolivia. Julie has been a speaker
and presenter at the National conference of Core Knowledge schools, and
the Latin American Heritage camps. As Director of Education at Museo de
las Americas (2002-2005) she increased workshop/tour participants from
11,000 to over 24,000.

Dear Friend of CHAC:
As an artist, educator and community member I am asking for your help in supporting CHAC.
Dia de los Muertos is fast approaching and we need your help to make
this event successful. This year the celebration begins on Friday,
October 23rd with a fantastic exhibition of altars and artwork titled,
“El Dia De Los Muertos” – A celebration of Life! Our opening night
festivities will include Aztec Dancers, historic Mexican refreshments
and face painting. In addition, we will have children’s programming
that includes traditional storytelling, dancing, gallery tours and, the
children’s favorite, making the sugar skulls!
We are able to provide such wonderful events through grants, membership and your support!
Last year we were able to host 75 children who rode the bus to CHAC. We
provided them with a tour, refreshments and a performance by the Aztec
dancers. Other children were not so lucky. We had several schools
wanting to take part in our actives but they did not have funds to do
so. Your support is crucial! Please take a moment to select one of the
tax-deductible options below and return it with your check in the
enclosed envelope. You may also visit www.chacweb.org
<http://www.chacweb.org/> or call CHAC to make a donation by
credit card.
With your help we can make this year’s celebration a winner! Thank you
in advance for your generous gift. I look forward to celebrating our
success together at El Dia de los Muertos!
Carlos Fresquez

This powerfully emotional exhibition is a collaborative effort celebrating the connection of the earth and its people of Native American, non Native, Hispanic and Indigenous cultures. These artists have come together to demonstrate the strength and power in diversity.
The time of the Red Moon, which occurs in the fall, represents harvest, bounty and the blessings of life's gifts. The art exhibit is likewise filled witha mixture of photography, mixed mediums, paintings, prints, books, jewelry, bead work and sculptures. While a Native American theme can be discerned in the focus of the show, the indiidual atists lean towards creating their own distinct styles. The artists' works integrate a wide variety of influences including abstract, modernism, pop art, as well as pieces that reference traditional indigenous art.

Jeff Penny
Jeff Penny and Justin Kephart are local artists that create art reflecting a vision of the world on the edge of transformation. This is symbolized in working with light and shadow, the brilliance of glass, and with the natural forms of wood and stone. Imagery is used to illicit a spontaneous harmonization of the collective mind through myth, symbol, and nature.

In honor of Dies y Seis de Septiembre In the Courtyard @ 772 Santa Fe Drive-303-571-0440 Directly from
Café Cultura we Present Ara Cruz
Born and raised in Denver, Ara Cruz is a Xicano/Indigenous (Mexica/Tiwa) spoken word artist, teacher, and organizer who finds himself standing on the shoulders of those women and men who have struggled to maintain traditions and dignity. With this strong sense of responsibility, he tries to walk in a good way everyday in order to better his community. Graduating from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a B.A. in Ethnic Studies (emphasis in Chicana/o and American Indian Studies), he now works with youth in Denver as a teacher and presenter. Using the experience he gained in campus and community organizing through MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chican@ de Aztlan) and other organizations, Ara became a co-founder of Café Cultura. It serves not only as a monthly open mic, but also provides a community space for Indigenous people (North and South) to come together and share energy, words, and struggles. Knowing his talents are a gift from Ometeotl, the Creator, he has shared his flor y canto (flower and song) with people of all ages. Through his poetry, he attempts to place a smoking mirror in front of his people and society in general, in an effort to make all of us think, speak, and act in positive ways. In that spirit, he has taught poetry and spoken word workshops at youth conferences and local schools. Ademas, he has performed at middle and high schools throughout the Denver area as well as at conferences, universities, protests, and fundraisers throughout Coloraztlanahuac and the “Southwest.” He has had the honor of sharing the stage with Trinidad Sanchez Jr., Slam Nuba, Debajo del Agua, Savage Family, El Vuh, Chicano Messengers of Spoken Word, Cihuatl-Ce, Guerrilla Queenz, Read Nex, Almas Intocables, and Olmeca. It's a changing world, and soon it will become a homogeneous world. I
don't much care for that idea, so I'm trying to see different cultures
and unspoiled lands while they still exist. Along the way I'll be
snapping photos for you all to enjoy.
While some people are willing to lug around their gear everywhere, I am not. The mere presence of a large camera being pulled out causes the spontaneity around you to break down (plus I'm just too lazy.) Often my shots are "from the hip" so the subject is unaware I'm even taking a photo. I hope you enjoy them.

The digital art of Robert Maestas will be featured on the north kitchen wall of CHAC Norte during July. Robert’s art is constantly changing and brings a unique perspective in what he calls “Our Creative Mind.”.

On May 15, CHAC Norte hosted a benefit party and auction for the Family Crisis Center, operated by Denver Human Services. Forty-five dolls were custom dressed and painted by young artists, all of whom are clients of the FCC.
Creative concepts for the finished dolls ranged from a creature out of an “alien” movie to a showgirl decked in sequins and feathers. Total funds raised were $1400, of which $305 goes directly to the young artists, and $1095 to the FCC recreation program.

CHAC proudly announces $14,000 in grant money donated by The Denver Foundation. CHAC’s long history of nurturing and preserving Chicano/Latino culture, its ongoing cultural outreach and educational programs, and its determination to build on its strengths, were all factors in the decision to award the grant.
A similar grant totaling $20,000 over two years from Hispanics in
Philanthropy and the Latino Community Foundation of Colorado will
enable us to seek professional input in some areas we’ve identified as
needing development. Expanding our donor base, developing a long-term
fundraising plan, and enhancing fundraising capabilities among our
board members are among our top priorities in a “sustainable growth”
plan for CHAC.
Mid-June, CHAC hosted 21 young and enthusiastic self-portraitists from Casa Start Program, at a “Me and Frida” class led by Jeremy Ulibarri. Kids learned something about the work of Frida Kahlo, and something about themselves in the process of creating their own portraits.
Check out “Me and Frida” and other classes at www.chacweb.org (click on Children’s Programs). Classes offer lots of enrichment at low cost, and scholarships are available. For details, talk to CHAC Director Crystal O’Brien (303) 571-0440.

Well…one day, old man Antonio is walking in the mountainous jungle of Chiapas with his friend Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos when he sees a macaw bird, its feathers blessed with each and every color, like a rainbow. The bird reminds the old man of a story that he thinks his friend Marcos should know – it’s the story of how the gods found all the colors in the world.
CHAC Children’s Programs
Thanks to a grant from the SCFD, we host a wealth of classes at a modest cost, geared for children and young people from preschool to high school age. We’ve also partnered with Access Gallery to offer programs for at-risk and special needs youngsters. These are hands-on classes taught by qualified practicing artists, and they encourage kids to explore the world around them through the creative process.
Classes aren’t limited to the school year – they enrich not only classroom programs, but would be wonderful enhancements to summer camp activities. Scholarships are available.
If you’re an educator, or involved with kids at any level, we probably have a class that’s appropriate for your group. Call Crystal O’Brien at CHAC (303) 571-0440. And visit these websites:

Johnathan James Kinney --- Austin Martineau
The art work that Johnathan James Kinney displays began as sample boards for his decorative painting business, JK Decorative and Faux Painting (www.jkpainting.com). Doing his part to be "green", John uses left over products from decorative painting and uses them in colorful and interactive ways to create a unique combination of abstract pieces. The use of plaster and paints applied by brush and trowel allow the colors to live and help share the passion the artist intended.
Austin Martineau began his craft as a means of self-discovery to find balance and peace. The pragmatist within overcame the once idealist and the artistic expressions reflect his changing perception of the world. That lines of good and evil are often woven and this world is less black and white than shades of gray with crimson. With playful bright colors and bold lines he has blended reality with his 'Neverland' as a reminder that come what may, the joy of life comes with the journey and to never forget to see the world as is should be.
CHAC Norte Gallery B --- Robert Martinez
Continuing his unique show in Gallery B is Robert Martinez.
"Martinez' talent is like an underground spring. It has always ben. It has trickled and flowed through every phase of his life. From student to teacher to husband and father, the spring has nurtured and sustained this quiet man, and now it is transforming the landscape of his life." --Renne Farado

Alistair Andrew Bane
Alistair Bane is a member of the Eastern Shawnee Nation of Oklahoma. He credits his father and grandmother with being the two strongest influences in his development as an artist. His grandmother, Henrietta Sylvia Stonebraker passed on a wealth of stories and history about his family. His father, Gary Stonebraker, an architect; taught him how to paint and draw at a young age and instilled in him the importance of social justice. These two influences have inspired him to often choose subject matters that speak to the continuing struggle of Indigenous people for basic human rights and sovereignty. Besides painting, Alistair is also a bead worker. His mixed media pieces often incorporate traditional Shawnee beadwork designs with images that reference modern day lives of Native people.
“Sometimes people view our culture and our arts as something that
exists only in the context of the past. I want people to recognize that
we are here and strong in the 21st century and to understand that our connection with our traditions is what gives us our strength.”
Thompson Williams
Thompson Williams is a resident of Denver, Colorado. He is a member of the Caddo Nation of Oklahoma, born to the late Melford and Winona Wells Williams. It was through the stories of their childhood that Thompson learned the richness of his culture. Thompson was fortunate to be part of this very artistic family. His father, his brothers and sister were all very talented artists. Today Thompson is a nationally known award winning artist. James Coburn of The Edmond Sun, Edmond Oklahoma says, “Mind, body and spirit integrate holistically in Thompson’s brushstrokes.
His creativity seems organic, flowing from a deep personal reservoir.” “My paintings focus on the spiritual heritage of my people. As viewers of Native American art we must see our involvement with the spirit that dwells inside each of us.” “I try to honor the people who came before me through my paintings. Today more than ever we need to be grateful to our ancestors. It is through their strength our culture survives today and will continue through the lives of our children.” http://thompsonwilliams.blogspot.com/
Stevon Lucero

Lola Montejo

Originally from
Spain , refers to her paintings
as Landscapes where the Land and Sky meet. Explaining, that
the land of the Eastern coast of
Spain , from
Barcelona down to Alicante
has a climate where luscious vineyards and olive groves grow in mild and
moderately arid conditions, under a skyline of low mountain ranges and the blue
of the Mediterranean Sea and sky. “There is a
proverb, that this Spanish landscape is a place where,
Se le
juna el cielo con la tierra, The
sky comes together with the earth. Luminous surfaces and a picture
plane full of movement suggest a landscape where the water, land, and sky all
meet at once. My paintings are a place of
contemplation. Nature is a surface loosely imagined and reality is the affects
of one's own condition. To have this, sense of the material world, is to find
oneself in their scale of the world”, says
Montejo. www.lolamontejo.com
