Artist ResourcesCall to Artists: Sisters of Color United for Education
06.19.2007
Sisters of Color United for Education is putting out a call to artists to participate in a truly unique mural project. The project is our exterior facility walls at 2895 W. 8th Ave. in Denver. We have currently planned the following timeline of events: 6/21/07 All artists interested in participating in the mural project please attend! Sisters is hosting a jump off meeting to build altares and offer the opportunity for artists to familiarize themselves with who we are and what we do. This meeting is scheduled from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Note: Artists please bring your portfolios or samples of your work. 6/26/07 Selected artist will be notified and required to attend the following meeting. 6/28/07 We are having a follow up meeting to start brainstorming and planning for the mural. 7/15/07 We are starting pre mural cultural workshops (to total 10 sessions) embarking on a journey that will explore Nuestra cultura from Pre-Hispanic America to today’s Floricanto and Arte Movements. This is a requirement for youth to participate in the mural project. Each session will be accompanied by examples of art related to that specific era. We hope to start the workshops by late July 2007. Estimated completion of the project would be August of 2008. We are asking artists who can volunteer their time to participate in this one-of-a-kind project. Currently there is no funding but we are pursuing avenues to provide stipends for the artists and youth who are involved in the planning and implementation. We are proposing that full color sketches be put together so that individuals and businesses might sponsor these panels. This project, to be titled Plaza Aztlan, at its completion will be one of Colorado’s largest murals. Since we have four walls, each wall will have an overlying theme of the “4 directions”. Each wall will have images that are connected to the theme. Please consider becoming part of the team that will realize this unique piece of Denver history. The youth in our community are thirsty for programs to engage them in arts and cultural immersion. This project is a perfect opportunity to assist in the promotion of cultural empowerment within our youth. We have the responsibility to leave our future generations better off than we are. This distinct project: “Sisters of Color United for Education’s Cultural Healing Center at Plaza Aztlan” will accomplish that lofty vision. Plaza Aztlan awaits you and we welcome you with open arms.
