Robert's interest in art ranges from painting bold contemporary abstract pieces to creating Native American representational paintings. Lisa Diamor Sanchez

I am inspired by the diverse layers of the past hidden beneath layers of paint in our cities and the possibility of change and the vibrancy that change brings. Through my art, I hope to express my belief that no matter what our lives have been we are given the opportunity each day to decide who we are and how we will live our lives.

M. Carlos Sandoval

Adventuring to draw at age five, Carlos immersed himself into the world of his calling and the surroundings of an artist. Carlos remembers the everyday Spanish traditions of a remote village. Having learned ethics and faith from his father, Sheriff and Hermano Mayor, he rode horses through alfalfa fields, tended to grandmother baking bread outside in her adobe oven, and dried autumn harvests of beans, corn, and chile for the winter.

Learning to Love Ourselves: Art Therapy Group in February

Ahh, February the month of love. Whether you have a current love in your life or not, learning to love yourself gives strength and health to significant relationships. So take time out for yourself to explore this very important skill in a group therapy setting using art as a means of expression. No art experience necessary.

Teacher Recertification Credit Workshop April 21, 2012

Earn one half credit toward teacher recertification through Adams State College as you attend the class on Chicano/Latino Arts & Culture at CHAC. This class will be offered in conjunction with Metro State College and the Journey through our Heritage exhibit, "Sacred Food Sacred Sites".

CHAC Receives a Grant from Hispanics in Philanthropy

CHAC is the proud recipient of a two year grant awarded to the organization from Hispanics in Philanthropy.

The grant will enable CHAC to develop a much needed donor database and marketing materials for corporate sponsorship.

Thank you Hispanics in Philanthropy for enabling CHAC to increase our visibility to the community, thereby allowing many more community members to take advantage of the wonderful arts and education that we offer!

Have You Met...

Rebecca Romero

Rebecca is a native of Colorado and has been a Denver educator for over 12 years. She has a Bachelor's in Fine Arts and a Masters in Counseling from the Univ of Phoenix.
Throughout her career she has worked within the urban community, with such programs as the Bridge Project, Arts Street, Archdiocese of Denver Inner city schools, as well as many local outreach workshops that CHAC provides.
She has been a member of CHAC for 10yrs and considers CHAC part of her extended family. Rebecca says, "CHAC is an amazing community to be a part of and as a member I've had the opportunity to meet many talented artists and individuals who have become life long friends".
Going with her creative nature, Rebecca has taken on another challenge and has started her journey into the world of cosmetology. She is currently working as a stylist at Honey Comb Salon in NW Denver. She is excited and optimistic for what 2012 will bring!

Tammy Montoya Yancey

Tammy Montoya Yancey has been a CHAC member for several years. She makes the most amazing eye popping jewelry. Her skull earrings are a favorite among members as well as customers. She has designed some amazing necklaces, and is now working in silver.

Tammy in her own quiet unassuming way would move mountains to help out. She volunteers on First Fridays, jumps in where needed to help things go smoothly.. .she is a very giving, loving and positive person. She has helped with several volunteer committees over the years. She is currently helping us get donations and sponsorships for our "Milagros del Corazon" fundraiser. She has been very successful. Tammy will never tell you no, no matter what is going on in her own life.

She has this amazing way about her that makes her so loveable. We are so thankful to have her as part of the CHAC Familia. That makes Tammy Montoya Yancey our CHAC Super Star of the Month!

Call for Entry: "Milagros del Corazón" Miracles of the Heart Fundraiser!

You are invited to design a heart!

You are cordially invited to design a piece of memorable artwork for CHAC's 13th annual silent auction fundraiser! We provide you a blank wooden heart, for a donation of $3.00 to cover supplies, which you will then turn into one of your magnificent masterpieces! We ask that you please do not design your heart as a valentine, but that you make it representational of your body of work. In other words, if you are a painter known for painting particular themes let your heart be the canvas for your theme. Do what you do best! Be sure to cover the entire wooden surface and make your art community friendly. CHAC will provide hanging devices for wooden hearts. We have a limited number of hearts this year so pick yours up early!

You are also invited to submit original artwork, goods or services, baskets or items for baskets. Your donation of these items to CHAC's fundraiser will all be tax deductible.

Pick up a blank heart at CHAC Gallery, 772 Santa Fe Dr., Denver anytime during regular gallery hours: Wed.-Thurs. 10:00-4:00, Fri. 10:00-5:00, Sat. 12:00-4:00.

Deadline for submission:
Entries will be accepted during regular business hours until Wednesday, February 8th.Drop off your completed heart, or any donated items mentioned above, to CHAC to be donated to our silent auction that will take place Friday February 10 at Space Gallery, 765 Santa Fe Dr. 7:00-9:30 PM. You will receive a free ticket to the event when you drop off your heart.

CHAC reserves the right to refuse any artwork deemed unsuitable/ inappropriate for display. CHAC will provide hanging devices for wooden hearts. CHAC is happy to accept additional artwork, goods, services and/ or monetary donations. Thank you for your support!

Ring in the New Year with Pueblo artists, Maria Lopez and Anthony Armijo! CHAC welcomes these tremendous artists from our neighbor city to the south, Pueblo.

Working in oil, Maria's art emits fractions of light, as if one were standing in front of exquisite stained glass. She is fascinated by using color to get paintings to shimmer and indicate movement.

Maria has exhibited nationally, from Colorado to Boston, and internationally from Peru to Spain!

This month CHAC honors Jerry Lawson, Storyteller and CHAC founding member. Jerry celebrates life and always has a great story to tell! She has been a long time CHAC member and is always a friend of CHAC. She is so generous with her time, talents and even in her finances; Jerry consistently gives to CHAC in these and other ways. Not only would CHAC cease to exist without our members, artists and supporters, but we would also be without the creativity, artistic talent, and commitment of time and resources that collectively, enable the organization to thrive.

In addition to serving as one of the pioneers of Denver's ArtDistrict on Santa Fe, CHAC is also the only Chicano/Latino art Gallery in Colorado that features the work of new and established artists. Since being founded in 1978 by a group of passionate visual and performing artists, CHAC has evolved into a dynamic arts organization concentrated on meeting the growing demand from the community.

Your commitment enables us to continue to offer year-round Gallery shows that include a spectacular array of visual art, provide nearly 5,000 underserved children with the opportunity to participate in authentic cultural arts education opportunities, sponsor landmark cultural events, such as El Dia de los Muertos celebrations and the annual Chile Harvest Festival and encourage an overall understanding of cultural awareness and a respect for diversity. Additionally, your support enables the organization to showcase a variety of local performers, such as dancers whose recent visit to the Gallery included a performance and tutorial on the traditional Chicano/Indian Matachine dance, as seen in the photo below.

Please know that when you contribute to CHAC, you directly impact the lives of the more than 23,000 individuals served by the organization each year. Call for Entry: Oil Painters!!!

Oil Painters of America would like to invite the members from Chicago Humanities & Arts Council to answer our Call for Entry to our 2012 National Exhibition. Oil Painters of America's Twenty First Annual National Exhibition of Representational Oil Paintings will be held June 22 through July 21, 2012 at Evergreen Fine Art Gallery in Evergreen, Colorado.

Approximately 30 awards will be given with a total value estimated in excess of $75,000 including a $25,000 Best of Show. We are proud to announce this year's Juror of Awards is Quang Ho along with Daniel Greene as the Distinguished Artist.

Deadline for mailed-in slide submissions is February 10, 2012. Deadline for on-line submissions is February 24, 2012.

To enter, artists must reside in the U.S., Canada or Mexico and be a current member of OPA at an annual fee of $60.
National Exhibition entry fee: $30 for the first entry, $15 for the second. Maximum Size Unframed: 1200 square inches.

The recipient of the handmade gift receives something that is one-of-a-kind, and made with care and attention that can
be seen and touched. It is the result of skill and craftsmanship that is absent in the world of large-scale manufacturing.

The ascendancy of chain store culture and global manufacturing has left us dressing, furnishing, and decorating alike. We are encouraged to be consumers, not producers, of our own culture. Our ties to the local and human sources of our goods have been lost. Buying handmade helps us reconnect.

Buying handmade is better for the environment.

The accumulating environmental effects of mass production are a major cause of global warming and the poisoning of our air, water and soil. Every item you make or purchase from a small-scale independent artist or crafter strikes a small blow to the forces of mass production.

Personally, my goal as an artist is not to create 'the next big thing,' but to consistently create products that people enjoy and I can feel good about. I'm convinced this won't make me rich, but as a creator, I find more meaning in coming up with ideas that don't just meet public expectations.

Did You Know That...

CHAC leads three cultural arts workshops a week at three different locations for under served populations: The Bridge Project, Boys & Girls Club, and Cristo Rey? We have about 20 children in attendance each week at each location for a total of about 60 children served weekly!

Have You Heard That...

CHAC leads cultural arts workshops right in our galleries where school groups make art surrounded by the fabulous works of our local artists? Workshops for school groups follow multiple Colorado State Standards that school teachers are required to teach. For the convenience of some schools, we also bring our workshops to them and conduct them right into the school!

CHAC is now authorized by Adams State College to conduct classes for teacher to earn recertification credit required to renew their teaching licensewhich expires every 5 years. Our classes are suitable for Elementary, Art, Spanish, History, and Social Studies teachers

Su Teatro Announces "El Corrido del Barrio"

Su Teatro is pleased to present to you this holiday season a classic Su Teatro work, El Corrido del Barrio – a coming of age play (with music!) about the families, friends and neighbors who lived in the old Westside of Denver – Auraria. The old 9th St. neighborhood was the religious, cultural and political center of the Chicano community. In 1972. The neighborhood was depopulated so that the Auraria Higher Education Center could be built. The loss to the Chicano community was tremendous.

Join us for a play that captures the lives of residents, the sweetness of everyday life, the challenges of racism and inequality, and the sacrifices that a tight knit barrio made so that the next generations of Chicanos could have more opportunities. El Corrido del Barrio is a beautiful tribute to a cherished local history - a special and significant Su Teatro masterwork.

CHAC Gallery Show: "A Room of One's Own: Urban Narrations"

CHAC is pleased to announce “A Room of One’s Own : Urban Narrations” an exhibition of visual art by Denver area artists Meggan DeAnza, Hunter Lawrence, Clara Martinez, Sylvia Montero, Tony Ortega, and Eugene Stewart-Huidobro.

Working in various and mixed media, these artists address the tension between the richness of urban life and the challenges of working in sprawling and crowded spaces.

The exhibition runs from November 4th through November 19th. The opening reception is Friday, November 19th, from 6:00pm - 9:00pm.

El Dia de Los Muertos 2011 Bigger Than Ever!

CHAC's Day of the Dead Celebration was bigger than ever this year!

We were interviewed by channel 9 News and Viva Colorado, exceeded our store sales by 25%, collaborated with 5 schools by exhibiting children's art work, serviced sold over 600 sugar skulls to outside organizations and for use in children's sugar skull decorating workshops, and served approximately 3,018 people in our day of the dead programming of art shows, children's workshops, school groups, and partnership events! WOW!!!

CHAC Mural, "Omeyokan / Place of Duality", Dedication

Join CHAC for the dedication of the mural, Omeyokan / Place of Duality, painted by David Ocelotl on CHAC's facade joining our two galleries.

October 21, 2011, 5:00. Come here David as he describes the vision and meaning of the mural in his own words.

Painted with lime powder mixed with pigment, this mural represents the duality of two energies coming together to form a connection. On the left is Casa Del Sol (House Of The Sun) representing a masculine energy a warrior as well as fire, growth, and direction of life. On the right is Casa De La Luna (House Of The Moon) representing a feminine energy, depicting water, a conch shell, regeneration, movement and infinity as it curves inward to the center of the galaxy. Together they create Omeyokan or Duality that is essential to the balance and existence of all living things on earth.

CHAC is very proud to display this mural on its walls!

Ceiba USA at CHAC, October 21st Dia de los Muertos Opening

Ceiba USA is a non-profit organization that is currently raising funds to build a 6-12 grade Secondary School for the Copal’aa region in the Mayan Nation, Guatemala.

In doing so they are in the process of a fundraising campaign to raise $1,500.00 by mid November 2011.

Ceiba will have a small fundraiser third Friday, October 21, 2011 and introduce a tradition that has been celebrated by Mayan people of Guatemala during Dia de los Muertos for centuries.

Many of the Mayan people celebrate Dia de los Muertos with honoring the dead by flying a kite. In honor of this tradition, Ceiba will be selling balloons for $1.00 to $2.00 each and have a releasing ceremony. All proceeds will go toward the school project.

It was Tina's wish to have any proceeds go to Hospice as they provided excellent care. Your support of this event would be greatly appreciated.

"A Fresh Look at Death": A series of therapeutic art workshops exploring death and life.

Have someone who you would like to honor or commemorate this Dia de los Muertos? A great way is to create an oferenda! Crown Hill is hosting the third annual El dia de los Muertos Celebration and will display oferendas as part of the celebration. We are looking for six oferendas/altars: categories include traditional, contemporary and artistic.
Guidelines include: table top and free standing, must not be larger than 5 feet long and 4 feet wide (there will be some floor space). Displays should be reasonably family friendly. If you are interested in submitting an oferenda/altar for display, please email Crown Hill Location Manager Bill Logan at william.logan@dignitymemorial.com with a brief summary of your idea by Friday, Sept. 9, 2011. Requirements: Work must be based on the cultural theme of the day of the dead. Work must be professionally framed and ready to hang. Art must be suitable for a family friendly environment. Limit 4-6 pieces per artist. Please be mindful of sizes, we are expecting a lot of art! We will make every attempt to hang all the artwork that we can!
Artwork may be refused if deemed inappropriate for the exhibit. We are encouraging schools and kids to participate in this exhibit!
Altars-We are encouraging small altars due to limited space. Prices start at $10.00. Sunday set up only!

Tesoro Cultural Center Announces the 10th Annual 1830’s Rendezvous & Spanish Colonial Art Market
September 17-18, 2011, 10am to 5pm both days

You rae invited to the 10th Annual Spanish Colonial Art Market, a juried show with Colorado and New Mexico’s most celebrated Spanish Colonial artists demonstrating their techniques and selling their work. Famous artists such as Charlie Carrillo, Catherine Robles Shaw, Jimmy Trujillo, Teresa Duran and Juan Lopez are just a few of the celebrated artists demonstrating and selling their retablos, silver filigree jewelry, tin work and encrusted straw appliqué.

Enjoy Flamenco dancing by Fiesta Colorado, featuring Jeanette Trujillo-Lucero and flamenco guitarist Steve Mullins. On Saturday, renowned traditional Hispanic Folk violinist, Lorenzo Trujillo and the Southwest Musicians will play authentic music of the 1830’s. The audience will be invited to participate in the traditional Hispanic Fandango dance.

Sunday will feature Pat Carbone and his family band. The public is welcome to enjoy the festivities including food, art, and music all weekend long. Concessions provided by The Fort Restaurant.

The grounds around The Fort will have colorful trappers and traders selling their wares including buckskin jackets and belts, trade silver and beaver skin hats. Back by popular demand, Dressing a Lady of the Santa Fe Trail – Corset to Calico, presented by Sharon Guli of River Crossing will be performed. New this year will be a Fur Trade Fashion Show. Learn tribal differences in clothing of the Native American tribes from around Old Bent’s Fort area. Activities for families include demonstrations of 1830’s era interpreters, listen to engaging in historical storytellers and participate in hands-on educational activities designed to teach about the rich culture and way of life in the Early West. Visit an interactive finger weaving and beading table for children of all ages to make his/her own necklaces or bracelets. Stop by at the tipi where there will be face painting. Experience a day full of fun in the old west.

Robert Maestas Presents: A Tribute to 09/11/01, (10 Year Anniversary)

Join Robert Maestas for his special exhibit in remembrance to 09/11/2001. This special event will be held at the CHAC Gallery located at 774 Santa Fe Drive, Denver, CO 80204.

The show runs from Aug. 31 thru Oct. 1, 2011.

First Friday September 2, 2011, 6pm – 10pm

Robert was one of 5,201 entrants from around the world that submitted an official concept for the World Trade Center Site Memorial Competition. Robert will be displaying his official entry concept created in 2002/2003 along with other very special items. He will also be showing new art he created specifically for this exhibit.

In April 2003, the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation launched what became the largest design competition in history. Across six continents, from 63 nations and 49 states, 5,201 individuals answered the call to honor all who were killed in terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993. The global outpouring of support reflects an unbounded faith in humanity - one that transcends nationality and geography.

CHAC has an exciting announcement to make! After much hard work, Julie Marino CHAC's Education Coordinator has recently become certified in the state of Colorado to practice Art Therapy. We are pleased to announce Julie will be holding various types of art therapy opportunities at CHAC, from art therapy groups, to workshops, to opportunities for one-on one therapy. To the Mexican mind, death is viewed as a transition of life, a normal stage in the circle of life on earth, and a natural progression…not an ending.

The goal of these art making workshops is to:
• Shed some light on the subject of death by taking a look at another culture’s perspective, namely Mexico.
• Grapple with your own views / fears of death
• Provide an avenue to grieve the loss of a loved one
• Experience the benefit of group interaction
• Complete the course with a renewed sense of living life to the fullest

Derek Blass lives in Denver, Colorado. He studied English and Economics at Duke University and earned a J.D. from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. He received the “2011 Outstanding New Hispanic Attorney Award” from the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association and has been designated as a “Colorado Rising Star” by Super Lawyers Magazine since 2009. He was elected to serve on Mayor John Hickenlooper’s Denver Latino Commission for four years, two of which he was a co-Chair. Denver artist/muralist David Garcia creates new look for CHAC Galleries' facade!

In this composition David has created the left side as "Casa del Sol" and the right side as "Casa de la Luna". David's inspiration for this new look for CHAC came from a trip he made to Teotihuacan where he had an encounter with the pyramid of the sun and the pyramid of the moon.

Artes de Taos Gallery now open in Taos, NM

CHAC Members Carlos Sandoval and Rob & Tammy Yancey have opened Artes de Taos Gallery in Taos, NM. The gallery is located right on the plaza at 103 Juan Largo Lane. Santa Barbara native Mitchell Robles is the third partner/artist in this beautiful gallery. CHAC founders Stevon Lucero and Jerry Jaramillo are “Special Guest Artists” and will have some great pieces being shown at the gallery. The artists would like to cordially invite you to stop by to visit anytime you are in the area and offer a special invitation to their Grand Opening event on Saturday, July 9th, 2011. 2011 CHAC Lifework Achievement Award

CHAC was pleased to present the 2011 Lifework Achievement Award on June 23, 2011 in honor of Abelardo “Lalo” Delgado. Lalo was one of CHAC's Founding Fathers who graced the community with his gift of poetry and oration for 55 years prior to his death in 2004. Nationally known for his poetry and his voice in the civil rights movement, Lalo worked with Cesar Chavez to better conditions of migrant farm workers. CHAC is pleased to honor Lalo whose work and expressions remain alive to us to this day.

Dr. Ramon del Castillo, chair of Metro State’s Chicano/a Studies department and poet as well, presented the award. Lalo's entire family was on hand to receive the award on his behalf. Dr. Roman del Castillo says of Lalo “He was the grandfather of Chicano poetry. He used the power of the pen to liberate the people, contributing significantly to Chicano poetry and literature.”

CHAC wishes to thank James Garcia for gracing us with his beautiful guitar playing and Tony Vecchio of King of the Kitchen catering for the mouth watering, delicious Mexican food!

Originating in South Texas, INTI created their 2008 debut album “RADIO REVOLUCION” while traveling across Central America and Mexico. The music video for INTI anthem “Almas sin Armas” shot on Aztec pyramids and in Mayan villages reflects the cultural journey of Latinos born in “el otro lado” the United States. INTI’s defiant lyrics mix Spanish and English speaking to both sides of the border. After touring extensively as a tribal rock band Kan'Nal and theatrical spectacle Lunar Fire, INTI moved to 5 Points in downtown Denver, CO to write and produce their 2009 release "CHEMTRAIL CANDY." CHAC is in need of volunteers this summer. CHAC is in need of the following items for our educational programming:

Folding chairs. CHAC's education program is growing so much that we often don't have enough chairs to accommodate all of our student visitors. Recently we held a class in each gallery where we served a total of 55 students at one time! Then several days later we had a total of 46 students. We are accepting donations of folding chairs.

Magazines with age appropriate pictures. We use these for our collage projects for kids.

Yarn. All colors and widths accepted.

Frida used art as therapy. This month you will have the opportunity to do the same at an art therapy group class led by a trained psychotherapist from Heart Therapy. No art skills are necessary.

Frida Art Therapy Group

Frida used art as therapy. This month CHAC will offer a chance for you to do the same through a three week art therapy group class led by a trained psychotherapist. No art skills are necessary.
